      Massimo buys my Spider
Massimo-Pomponio.JPG
Massimo Pomonio from Kent called after seeing my Spider on the web.

I say 'My' Spider as I had intended keeping a nice Herald but a long waiting customer below, managed to get me to sell it, if the Spider had sold first I would have kept the Herald as a daily runabout, however, I said I would keep the Spider instead.

But being a dealer, you can't keep everything or you would be out of business. So on one of the hottest days, I took my last drive in her to Folkstone, and what a lovely drive down it was too..

Massimo was delighted with the car when we arrived and plans to use it on a daily basis when you pops down to check his Resaurant.

I'm sure you will be as delighted with the Spider as I was.

Thank you for Choosing 'The Shilling Years'

My last long journey in the Spider

Mike from Wales buys my Herald.
Mike-Day.JPG
Mike Day from Swansea has been calling me for two years, I always answer the phone!!! But usually the car he is after has sold.

On this occassion, he wanted my Herald, a nice little car I took in
as a PX and planned to keep for myself, I even put myself on the log
book, however, after a reality check, I had too many cars and space was needed, if the Spider had sold, the Herald would remain, alas, I'm here to fulfill customer needs and Mike has been waiting for the right Classic for some time.

It's always nice when a Classic goes to a good home, and after finally meeting Mike, the Herald really suits his needs.

Thanks for your business Mike, it was great to meet you.

Nicolaï Becart from Nice in France
nicola.jpg
Nicolaï Becart flew to Stansted then got a train to Peterborough to collect this lovely little 1958 Austin A35 Van with window conversion.

Nicolaï is vet in Nice and wants to use the van for his surgery and he said he and his wife are opening a pet store soon and it will also be used for advertising and deliveries.

The route back should have been, drive to Dover, get the ferry, stay in Lille with a friend, drive on Sunday to his mother's in Paris, then, the van would go on a train for the remaining 700 miles to Nice the guys would fly back. However, a train strike in Paris changed all that, poor Nicolaï had to drive all the way home. Yes, he covered 1000 miles in 3 days! He had some brake trouble, additional fluid helped and while on a coffee break, the van wouldn't start. After touching a few wires, Vooooom, off she went again. That's the spirit. Good old Lucas wiring!

See his trip home captured below.

Here is part of an e-mail recived a couple of days later.

Hi Paul,
Some news to tell you, we finally got back home after 1000 miles! As you know I stopped first in Lille Saturday evening, then we get to Paris on Sunday with a friend supposed to go to the South with me by plane.

Monday when we arrived at the train station in the beginning of the afternoon they welcome us with a "sorry we can't take the car a strike is starting tomorrow go away !" ........g French national railway. We couldn't go back to my mum's and leave the car there because it was too far to catch the plane then!
So the only solution was to drive down to Nice. We lost our plane tickets !

We left Paris at 2 PM and stopped many times to feed the car with oil and water (it doesn't need much fuel 6 liter/60miles but quite as much oil !).

Suddenly, just when we restarted from a fuel station the car stopped....try to start again: nothing! We open the distributor nothing wrong but there was no ignition! We touched all the cables and it started again ! Lucas Prince of Fear !

We crossed a thunderstrom at around Lyon. And at about 200 miles from Nice appears a strong "clock-clock..." noise (transmission or cylinder blocks ?) when the engine is in gear and we accelerate to climbe a hill. I hope it's not too bad ?
We arrived with the day strarting at 5:50 AM in Nice after 15,5 hours ! We drove at 50 MPH only.
I will now make a full serice with ignition, engine oil, water (and cleaning the radiator), gearbox oil, sparkplugs (where they changed) and I still have to find out the brakes problem and this new noise ! And install safety belts.

So we, and the car arrived tired but we and it did it ! It was quite an adventure but people encourage us with nice signs and taking pictures.

It's the first time I drive on the motorway with all trucks driving faster than me ;-)
I will make new pictures of the Austin in it's new house !
My wife and my daughter loves it !
Regards
Nicolaï

Thank you Nicolaï for coming all this way to buy a British Classic and having the courage to drive 1000 miles + home, you are truly a brave man and a good sport.
Regards Paul

John invests in his future
John-Midget.JPG
Rear-leftview.JPG
John from Oxford called to view this lovely little Midget. John wants something to enjoy when he retires from work next year. At 'The Shilling Years' we often sell nice Classic's for customers and this Midget was one of the best examples I have had in.

If you read the 'Chasing Cars' feature in Classic Car Weekly, its not hard to see why John made a quick decision to invest in her. It's great to take the hassel out of selling for the owner and, to find the right Classic for a careful buyer. Pleasure doing business with you both.

Jamie found the right Car
Jamie-Bury-St-Edmunds.JPG
Jamie called to ask if this 68 Minx was still available after a very disappointing day out in Carlisle to view a Hunter advertised on eBay.

Apparently, the car wasn't as good as Jamie had hoped for to use as a daily Classic. I'm being very polite, but considering they had travelled up from Bury St Edmunds, it is very frustrating when a car isn't what it seems. This was the second time I have had the pleasure in selling this Minx. I had it in to sell for a customer a year ago and again recently for Anne Marie, the present owner.

I'm sure you will be happy with this one Jamie.

Paul wants an MG for work.
Paul-Paul.JPG
Paula nurse from Cambridge cought a train with his partner Paul to view this lovely MG BGT, Paul said, he owns an MG but it needs too much work and wanted to find a nice example to use as a daily Classic to get to and from work in London.

The overal condition on this MG was lovely and it really is a car you can enjoy straight way, the overdrive will keep the cost of fuel down on the daily route in and out of London.

I think it will be much admired at shows during the summer. Both Paul and his partner are Classic enthusiasts and this MG will suit their needs.

Mick from Sussex buys another Rover P6
Mike-02-P6.JPG
2000TC-3500S.JPG
Mick from Sussex got the train up to view this Rover 2000TC.

Mick already has a P6 but its a 3.5 auto which is a bit juicy for daily use. After a good spin and a cuppa, Mick set off for the 145 mile trip back home. He sent an nice e-mail the following day to say;

Good Morning Paul

Just thought I'd drop you a line to say thanks for your hospitality yesterday. The P6 & I made it back to Crawley with no problems at all (I even managed to tune out the Gear Lever Rattle by resting my left leg against the lever on the Motorway)! All in all, that was a really enjoyable 145 Mile drive and I took the opportunity to use it as a 'shake down' run to spot any little things that need attention. I'll have a few enjoyable evenings generally tinkering with the Car to adjust a few of the panels and cure some of the little rattles from the Bonnet and Bootlid. Even the overspray on the Door Seals comes off with gentle persuasion, so that's another result.

This morning, she started just fine (though I think I'll be replacing the Battery this week as she was a bit sluggish on the key). Once she was running there were no problems at all. In fact, she drives better from cold than my V8 Auto!

Thanks again for you kind help yesterday, it was a pleasure meeting you.

Kind Regards
Mick
